Camp Sevier stood on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, in 1918, when the Army had turned a stretch of Piedmont farmland into a training ground for the war in Europe. The cantonment was built in 1917 and named for John Sevier, the frontiersman and first governor of Tennessee, and it housed infantry of the 30th Division, drawn largely from National Guard units in the Carolinas and Tennessee, before they shipped overseas. A remount depot on the grounds handled the horses and mules the Army needed to haul guns, wagons, and supplies, and the region's farms and textile mills supplied a steady flow of men and labor. That fall, influenza moved through crowded army camps across the country, and the Armistice in November brought the training effort to an end.
