Camp Sevier, on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, was one of the large training cantonments the federal government built in 1917 as the country expanded its army for the First World War. In 1918 the 119th Infantry, part of the 30th Division, drilled there before the division shipped out for France that spring. Greenville was then a Piedmont textile town, with cotton mills employing many local families, and the arrival of tens of thousands of soldiers brought new business to its shops, boarding houses, and rail depots. Residents knew the camp as a loud, crowded neighbor whose young men passed through the city on their way overseas.
