Camp Sevier, on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, was built in 1917 as a federal training camp for National Guard and draftee units from the Carolinas and Tennessee. In 1918 the 114th Field Artillery was one of the regiments drilling there, learning to handle horses, guns, and the new wartime routines before deployment to France. Greenville was then a textile and railroad town in the upcountry, and its mills and rail connections gave the camp a local economy of supplies, labor, and soldiers' trade. Local residents watched the post grow into a city of tents and wooden barracks, and many of them took part in wartime drives for bonds, Red Cross work, and food conservation. The camp's activity ended as the war did, and the influenza outbreak of autumn 1918 added to the strain on the men and the town.
