Camp Sevier, on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, was an Army training cantonment built in 1917 as the country entered the First World War. In 1918 it housed National Guard units drawn largely from the Carolinas and Tennessee, and the 113th Field Artillery, part of the 30th Division, trained there before the division went overseas. Greenville was a textile town whose cotton mills and railroad shops carried much of the local economy, and residents followed the camp's drills and marches with both pride and worry about the men who would soon be sent to France. That fall, influenza spread through military camps across the country, and the epidemic forced quarantines that disrupted both the camp and the city.
