Camp Sevier sat on the edge of Greenville, South Carolina, in 1918, when the Army used it as a training cantonment for soldiers drawn largely from the Carolinas and Tennessee. The 30th Division, a National Guard formation nicknamed "Old Hickory," trained there before shipping to France, and the 105th Field Signal Battalion was one of its support units, learning to lay telephone wire and carry messages under battlefield conditions. Greenville was a textile and railroad town, with cotton mills along the Reedy River and rail lines carrying goods and troops through the Piedmont. Many young men from nearby mill villages and farms passed through the camp that year, and the war reshaped city life through Liberty Bond drives, rationing, and the influenza outbreak that swept through crowded army camps in the autumn.
