Camp Sevier, near Greenville, South Carolina, was one of the large cantonments built for the National Army during the First World War, and in 1918 it was filled with draftees training for service in France. The 105th Supply Train belonged to the 30th Division, a unit that drew many of its soldiers from the Carolinas and Tennessee, and the camp's rows of tents, mess halls and drill fields were laid out to process men quickly through instruction in transport, supply and motor work. Camp Sevier had been named for John Sevier, the frontiersman and first governor of Tennessee, and it sat on the outskirts of a textile and railroad city whose mills were running at full stretch for the war. The influenza epidemic that autumn would sweep through training camps across the country, and Greenville's residents would have followed news of the camp closely.
