Camp Sevier stood near Greenville, South Carolina, in 1918, when the city was a Piedmont textile and railroad town whose mills and rail lines drew workers from the surrounding farm counties. The army built the camp in 1917 to train National Army and National Guard troops, and the 105th Engineers belonged to the 30th Division, a unit drawn largely from the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee. Engineers at the camp learned to build roads, bridges, and trenches, skills they would need in France later that year. Greenville residents watched the troops drill, march through town, and fill its churches and dance halls, while the influenza epidemic of autumn 1918 brought quarantines and deaths to many training camps across the country. The war's end in November 1918 changed the camp's purpose within months.
