Camp Sevier, on the edge of Greenville, South Carolina, was an Army training cantonment built in 1917 when the country was preparing to send troops to France in the First World War. The 30th Division, drawn largely from National Guard units of the Carolinas and Tennessee, trained there, and the 115th Field Artillery was one of its regiments. In 1918 the camp was a city of wooden barracks, drill fields, and rail connections that brought recruits and supplies into the upcountry. Greenville, a textile and mill town of the Piedmont, took on a wartime role as local families hosted soldiers and watched young men leave for Europe. The fall influenza epidemic that year swept through crowded army camps, and it reached the Greenville area as well.
