Camp Sevier, on the edge of Greenville, South Carolina, was built in 1917 as a training cantonment for National Guard units from the Carolinas and Tennessee, and in 1918 the 118th Infantry trained there for service in the First World War. Greenville was then a textile and manufacturing city in the upstate, where cotton mills and the railroads that carried their output supported much of the local economy. Mill families had sons and husbands in uniform, so the camp's news reached nearly every neighborhood. Soldiers drilled on open fields among rows of barracks, mess halls and tents, and a camp that size brought paying visitors and business into town. That autumn, influenza swept through military camps across the South, and the training grounds were not spared.
