Camp Sevier sat near Greenville, South Carolina, in 1918, when the United States was deep in the First World War. Built in 1917 as one of the large training cantonments for the new National Army, it held tens of thousands of draftees and volunteers, and the 120th Infantry was a unit of the 60th Infantry Brigade in the 30th Division, which trained there before going overseas. The camp drew heavily on the surrounding Piedmont towns for supplies, labor and visitors, and Greenville's cotton mills and rail lines carried much of the traffic. Soldiers in training faced influenza and measles that autumn, and many of the camp's men would soon serve in the fighting in France.
