Camp Sevier, on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, was built in 1917 as a training ground for the nation's World War I army, and in 1918 it was crowded with National Guard and draftee units preparing for service in France. The Liberty theater shown here was one of the entertainment halls the army and civilian war-relief groups put up in camps to keep soldiers occupied away from the barracks and the nearby towns. Greenville was then a textile center, with cotton mills along the Reedy River and a population that had grown quickly as the war drew manufacturing and recruiting into the region. Camp life that year was shaped by the war, by drills and departures for overseas, and by the influenza outbreak that swept through army camps in the fall of 1918.
