In 1918 Camp Sevier, an Army training post on the edge of Greenville, South Carolina, held draftees and National Guard units preparing for service in France. The camp took its name from John Sevier, the frontiersman and first governor of Tennessee, and it had been built quickly after the United States entered the war in 1917. Greenville was a textile town whose cotton mills and railroad connections gave it steady work, and local merchants relied on the soldiers' payroll. The Liberty theater pictured here offered enlisted men entertainment during their off-duty hours, but the influenza epidemic that autumn would soon close such gathering places across the state.
