Camp Sevier, near Greenville, South Carolina, was a U.S. Army training cantonment in 1918, when the country was fully engaged in the First World War. Built in 1917 on the slopes near Paris Mountain, it housed soldiers of the 30th Division, drawn largely from the Carolinas and Tennessee, who drilled there before sailing for France. Greenville at the time was a textile and cotton-mill town, and many residents knew the camp as a source of wartime business, visiting soldiers, and anxiety about sons and neighbors overseas. The fall of 1918 brought the influenza epidemic to crowded military camps across the South, and Sevier was no exception, adding grief and disruption to the training routine.
