Camp Sevier was an Army training cantonment built in 1917 on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, and named for John Sevier, the frontiersman and first governor of Tennessee. In 1918 the camp was crowded with draftees and National Guard units, and it drew young men from across the Carolinas and Tennessee into training. Greenville itself was a textile and mill town whose economy rested on cotton spinning and weaving, and the war effort pulled many mill workers, farmers, and small-town men into uniform. The camp's wooden barracks, drill fields, and guardhouses reshaped the edge of the city, bringing soldiers, supply trains, and wartime rules into everyday local life. The stockade in this view, with its tower and enclosed yard, marks the military discipline that governed the camp during its busiest year.
