Camp Sevier, on the edge of Greenville, South Carolina, was built in 1917 to train National Guard units from the Carolinas and Tennessee, and in 1918 it housed the 30th Division preparing for service in France. Greenville was a textile town, with cotton mills and railroad lines that tied the upstate to larger markets and shaped daily work and wages. This southwest view from a stockade guard tower shows the camp's barracks laid out in orderly rows, a reminder of how quickly the army had transformed farmland into a city of soldiers. That autumn, influenza spread through crowded military camps, and Greenville families lived with both the anxiety of the epidemic and the news of young men who had trained there.
