Camp Sevier, on the edge of Greenville, South Carolina, was a training cantonment that the Army built in 1917 as the United States entered the First World War. In 1918 the camp housed the 30th Division, drawn largely from National Guard units of the Carolinas and Tennessee, and the 105th Ammunition Train was one of the support units that hauled shells, supplies, and equipment for the infantry and artillery. Greenville was then a center of the Piedmont textile industry, with cotton mills employing many local families, so the wartime demand for soldiers and supplies brought new money, traffic, and work to the city. That autumn, influenza swept through military camps across the country, and Camp Sevier was not spared, adding grief and disruption to the training schedule before the armistice in November.
