Burkburnett, in Wichita County in north Texas, was in the middle of an oil boom in 1920. Drilling had begun in 1918, and within a couple of years the town and the surrounding leases filled with derricks, supply yards, and crews arriving from across the Southwest. Housing could not keep up, so many workers lived in tents and makeshift shacks, and the streets were crowded with freight wagons and early automobiles. The field lay close to Wichita Falls, which had already grown as a railroad and cotton-shipping center, and the strike drew money, speculators, and new residents into both places. This block of leases shows how quickly the land around the town had been given over to wells and equipment.
