El Paso, Texas, in 1910 was a railroad and smelting town of roughly 39,000 people on the Rio Grande, facing Ciudad Juárez across the river. Its growth rested on the rail lines that met there, including the Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe, and on a large copper smelter that processed ore from mines in Mexico and the American Southwest. Fort Bliss, just northeast of the city, kept regular troops close at hand, and a field artillery unit drilling in this photograph reflected how seriously the army treated the border. That tension sharpened in late 1910, when the Mexican Revolution began just across the river and refugees, arms buyers, and soldiers started crowding into the city.
