Corsicana, the seat of Navarro County, was a cotton town in 1914, but since a water-well drilling struck oil in 1894 it had also become a petroleum center that drew drillers, pipeline crews, and refinery workers. Railroads carried bales of cotton and barrels of crude out of town, and the oil boom pushed the population up, bringing new houses and crowded streets that city leaders struggled to pave and light. The Odd Fellows Home, run by the fraternal order whose lodges spread across Texas after the Civil War, cared for aged members and their dependents, a charity supported by lodge dues and donations. Residents of the day would have known Corsicana first for its oil field and second for the care the Odd Fellows gave to the elderly and widowed.
