Texas City, on the north shore of Galveston Bay, was still a small place in 1914, and its residents lived with the memory of the 1900 Galveston hurricane, which had devastated the island city a few miles away. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and in August the Panama Canal opened, prompting Gulf Coast boosters to predict that cotton, rice, and oil would move through Texas ports in new volumes. A military unit photographed in Texas City that year would have been part of a state that was still largely agricultural, with much of its income tied to cotton and cattle. This panoramic view captures a moment when the town's men in uniform stood before the camera.
