Houston in 1914 was feeling the effects of a war that had just broken out in Europe. That summer, overseas buyers pulled back from the cotton market and prices fell sharply, hitting the factors, compress operators and wholesale houses along Buffalo Bayou that had built their business on the crop. Local merchants worried that the Gulf trade would stall just as the ship channel neared completion, and they argued over whether the city could hold its own against Galveston. Downtown kept its daily rhythm of wagons, streetcar bells and clerks hurrying between offices, while families in the outlying neighborhoods watched the price of cotton and wondered how long the uncertainty would last.
