Fort Worth, Texas, in April 1918 was a rail and livestock town of roughly 100,000 people, shaped by the Fort Worth Stockyards and the meatpacking plants that processed cattle shipped in from the surrounding ranges. Its position on several railroad lines made it a natural site for military training, and in 1917 the Army established Camp Bowie on the city's west side to train National Guard units from Texas and Oklahoma. The 36th Division, drawn from those two states, drilled there through the spring of 1918 before going overseas to fight in France. A dated group view from this April reflects that wartime moment, when soldiers in training and the city that housed them were tied closely together. Residents of the period would have known Fort Worth as both a cattle center and a city preparing its young men for war.
