Fort Worth had grown to roughly 106,000 residents by 1920, and oil money from the Ranger and Burkburnett fields in North Central Texas had made it a headquarters for producers, supply houses, and landmen as much as a cattle town. Drillers and promoters crowded the downtown hotels, while the packing houses and stockyards in North Fort Worth still handled cattle shipped in by rail. Prohibition took effect nationwide that January, and churches and civic groups pressed the new law hard in a city where saloons had long been part of the local economy. The town was caught between its livestock past and a petroleum future that would soon reshape its banks, office blocks, and streets.
