Fort McIntosh stood on the edge of Laredo, Texas, where the Rio Grande separates the United States from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, and in 1920 the post was tied closely to that border. The Mexican Revolution had spilled across the river in the 1910s, and the army's presence along the frontier, including the 1916 raids and the troop buildup that followed, had left Laredo accustomed to soldiers, patrols, and rumors of trouble. The city's economy rested on the river crossing, with rail lines and the international bridge carrying cattle, hides, and goods between the two countries. Civic life in the 1920s revolved around those commercial ties and the Mexican-American families whose roots in the town reached back well before the fort was built in 1849. The view shows a settlement that Laredo residents would have recognized as both a military outpost and a border trading town.
