Laredo, Texas, and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, faced each other across the Rio Grande in 1920, two border towns bound together by trade, family ties, and rail lines. Cattle, hides, wool, and mohair moved north from the ranches of the region, while merchandise and people crossed the international bridges in both directions. The Mexican Revolution, which had spilled across the border through the 1910s, left many refugees and anxious officials on both banks, and by 1920 the fighting was winding down under a new Mexican government. Residents on both sides would have known the twin cities as a single commercial and social world, where Spanish was widely spoken and a visit to the other side for shopping or church was an ordinary part of life.
