Necessity, Texas, in 1920 was a small rural community whose fortunes, like those of most towns in the state, depended heavily on cotton. Growers worked much of the land with tenant labor, and the boll weevil, which had reached Texas in 1892, had already pushed many farmers to cut acreage or plant other crops. The early 1920s also brought oil booms to North Texas, such as the Burkburnett field discovered in 1918, which drew workers and investment away from farm life. Few records detail Necessity itself at this date, so the view is best read as a snapshot of an ordinary Texas town still anchored to the land and to the cotton economy around it.
