This 1920 panoramic photograph is labeled Columbia County, Texas, but the title does not clearly match a county in the state, so the scene is best read against Texas as a whole that year. The state's economy still rested largely on cotton, and the boll weevil was squeezing growers and tenant families who worked land they did not own. Oil was already reshaping Texas, with North Texas fields drawing crowds, rigs, and new towns in the years just before. In small communities, rail depots, cotton gins, general stores, and churches served as the centers of trade and social life, and a town recorded in a wide panorama usually reflected local pride as much as the view of its streets.
