In 1910, Denton, Texas, was a county seat and railroad town north of Dallas, with a economy built on cotton, grain, and livestock that passed through its depots. The College of Industrial Arts, the state-supported school for women known as C.I.A., shaped much of the town's daily life. Founded by the Texas Legislature in 1901, it trained young women in teaching, domestic science, and business skills at a time when few public institutions offered such training to them. Students, faculty, and townspeople shared churches, streets, and campus events, and the college was the place most Denton residents would have named when they described their town to outsiders.
