Baylor University sat on the bluffs above the Brazos River in Waco, Texas, in 1910, about two decades after the Baptist-founded school had moved from Independence to its new campus. Waco's economy rested largely on cotton, cottonseed processing, and rail freight, and its position on several rail lines made it a commercial center for the surrounding farm country of Central Texas. For the students and townspeople of 1910, Baylor was a source of local pride and a counterweight to the state's larger universities, with its Baptist ties shaping daily life, chapel, and campus rules. The main academic building, Old Main, stood at the center of the grounds and gave the college its most recognizable profile from across the river.
