Houston in 1910 was a fast-growing port city on Buffalo Bayou, roughly 80,000 residents strong, and its prosperity rested on cotton, lumber, and the rail lines that converged there. The Houston Ship Channel was still years from completion, so cargo moved mostly by barge and rail, and the city's cotton factors and merchants traded heavily with the Gulf and the interior. Downtown streets were filling with electric streetcars and new commercial blocks, while the oil boom that would reshape the region was just beginning to draw attention. Residents of the period knew Houston as a railroad and cotton center, the place where Texas goods were bought, sold, and shipped out.
