Here a boatman works a quant, the long pole pushed against the bottom to move a flat-bottomed boat through shallow water where sails are of little use. The boat is loaded with marsh hay cut from the reed-fringed meadows of the Norfolk Broads, a slow, physical trade that Peter Henry Emerson and T.F. Goodall treated as part of the landscape they wanted to record. The picture appears as plate 16 in their 1886 book *Life and Landscape on the Norfolk Broads*, and its platinum print process gives it the soft, even tones that Emerson favored in his naturalistic work.
