From the hilltop of Capstone, this view looks down over the rooftops of Ilfracombe, a North Devon seaside town on the Bristol Channel, toward its beach and harbor. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that built up color from a photographic base using several lithographic stones. The Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its catalog of English views, which were sold to American buyers. As a popular Victorian holiday resort, Ilfracombe is shown here much as summer visitors would have wanted to remember it.
