New Brighton is a seaside resort on the Wirral peninsula, across the Mersey estuary from Liverpool, and this photochrom shows its sandy shore as it looked to tourists in the 1890s. The image is a photomechanical print made by the photochrom process, which the Detroit Publishing Company used to produce vivid color views of places in Britain, Europe and North America. Its catalog number, 10281, places it in the company's 1905 listing of English views, though the picture itself was likely taken a few years earlier. Such prints were sold as souvenirs and parlor keepsakes, and they preserve the leisure culture of Victorian and Edwardian seaside holidays.
