Blackpool Tower rises above the sands on the Lancashire coast in this view, a steel landmark that opened in 1894 and was modeled on the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The resort drew holidaymakers from the industrial north by rail, and the tower, with its ballroom and menagerie, became the centerpiece of the seafront. The photochrom process printed the photograph from multiple lithographic stones to give it soft, sunlit color, and this example comes from a Detroit Publishing Company catalog of English views issued in 1905.
