Hastings' East Cliff rises above a shingle beach where fishing boats were hauled up and fish were sold, and this photochrom captures that working waterfront in color. The print comes from the Photochrom Prints collection, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which licensed the Swiss photochrom process and sold hand-colored views of Britain and Europe to tourists and collectors around 1900. Hastings had long been a fishing town before it grew into a seaside resort, so the mix of fish stalls and holiday visitors on the sand shows the two sides of the town at once.
