Helgoland, a small North Sea island that Britain handed to Germany in 1890, is the subject here, shown along its sandy eastern beach and rocky southern point. The color comes from the photochrom process, in which several lithographic stones were printed over one another and often retouched by hand. Detroit Publishing Company sold these German views to American buyers, and this one appears as number 8230 in its 1905 catalog. Visitors came to the island by steamer to see its cliffs and sea air.
