The beach pictured here is the western shore of Helgoland, the small North Sea island that lies about 40 miles off the German coast. The print is a photochrom, a color process Detroit Publishing Co. used for its catalog of views, and the title on the piece reads "Westküste & Oberland," marking the west coast and the upper land of the island. Helgoland had been a British possession until 1890, when it was ceded to Germany, and it grew into a popular resort in the following decade. Photochroms like this one were sold as souvenirs, so the image captures how visitors of the 1890s saw the island's sandy shore and cliffs.
