East Beach on Helgoland, the small rocky island in the North Sea, is shown in this color photochrom print, one of the views of Germany that the Detroit Publishing Co. sold in the early 1900s. Helgoland had been a British possession until 1890, when it was ceded to Germany in exchange for Zanzibar, so scenes like this one date from the years when the island was becoming a German resort. The photochrom process built its color from several stone lithographic plates laid over a photographic base, which gave these prints their soft, painted look. The catalog reference and print number on the record help place the image within the company's series.
