The subject is the seaside hotels and beach on Borkum, a North Sea island that grew into a fashionable bathing resort in the late 1800s. Visitors came by steamer from the mainland to take sea air and bathe, and the row of hotels facing the sand reflects that boom. The image is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that produced color prints from photographs, and the Detroit Publishing Company later sold these views in America. Its catalog entry, number 17489, places it among the company's "Views of Germany" series, which gives a useful picture of how European resorts were presented to American buyers around 1900.
