Blankenberghe is a Belgian seaside resort on the North Sea coast, and this photochrom shows its hotel row as it looked in the closing years of the nineteenth century. Photochrom was a color process that Detroit Publishing Co. used to reproduce photographs as lithographic prints, and this example is listed in one of the company's catalogues from about 1905 as part of a series on Belgian architecture and sites. Resort hotels like these were central to the coastal towns of that era, drawing summer visitors who arrived by rail and stayed for weeks at a time. The print's pale, saturated palette gives a sense of the seafront as tourists would have remembered it.
