Scheveningen, the North Sea resort just west of The Hague, is the setting here: the Kursaal, a large entertainment and social building, stands with its neighboring hotels and terrace along the seafront. Resorts like this drew Dutch and foreign holidaymakers in the late nineteenth century, when sea bathing was becoming fashionable and the terraces were where visitors took refreshments and watched the promenade. This print comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss color method that turned photographs into multicolor lithographs and was widely sold as travel souvenirs in the 1890s. The terrace scene, with its tables and strollers, shows how the seaside leisure trade was organized.
