Leysin, a village on a sunny shelf above the Rhône valley, is the subject here, with its hotels set against the mountain slopes of the canton of Vaud. In the 1890s, visitors were just beginning to come to such high villages for the clean air and mountain views, so these lodgings served a new kind of traveler. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland that used several stone plates, each inked in a different color, to add color to a photograph. Detroit Publishing Company sold many such views of Swiss towns to American buyers around 1905.
