Bex, in the canton of Vaud, took its name for this view from the salt works that gave the town its wealth for centuries, and the Hotel Salines and the Villa des Bains stood nearby to serve visitors who came for the local brine baths and mild air. The print was made with the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photography with multiple stone lithography to produce color views. The Detroit Publishing Co. sold these Swiss scenes in America, and this example comes from its 1905 catalog.
