Aigle, a wine town in the canton of Vaud, gives this view its subject: a hotel in the Rhône valley at a time when travelers were beginning to arrive in the region in growing numbers. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Zürich in the late 1880s that transferred a photograph onto stone for multicolor printing, with each color layer worked up by hand. Numbered within the *Views of Switzerland* series, prints like this one were sold as souvenirs to travelers, who prized their bright, saturated colors.
