Perched on the Stanserhorn above the town of Stans in Unterwalden, this hotel was a mountain inn for travelers who wanted a view across central Switzerland. The print comes from the Photochrom process, a early color method developed in Zurich in the late 1880s, in which several stone plates were inked and layered to add color to a photograph. Such prints were widely sold to tourists in the 1890s, so the picture reflects both the rise of Alpine travel and the commercial appeal of the Swiss landscape.
