The Hotel Mürren sat in the village of Mürren, perched on a sunny terrace high above the Lauterbrunnen valley in the Bernese Oberland. Its visitors came for the views of the Jungfrau massif, and in the 1890s the village was becoming a destination as walkers and early tourists arrived. This Photochrom print comes from Photoglob of Zürich, which built the process on multiple stone lithographs, each inked in a different color and layered by hand. Those layers give the print its soft, almost painted tones, and they make it a useful record of how the Swiss hotel trade looked just as mass tourism was taking hold.
