The hotel named here, the Bear, stands in Grindelwald, a village in the Bernese Oberland that sits beneath the north face of the Eiger and the Wetterhorn. Its glacier, which reaches down close to the valley floor, drew visitors who came to walk, climb, and see ice up close. The photochrom process used for this print was a Swiss technique that layered colored inks over a black-and-white photograph, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold these views to American buyers in the early 1900s. The print shows how inns like this one served the growing wave of travelers who came to the Alps in the late nineteenth century.
