A mountain hotel at the summit of the Furka Pass, in the Swiss Alps, is the subject here, a stop for travelers crossing high mountain roads by horse-drawn coach in the late 1800s. The picture was made by the photochrom process, which was developed in Switzerland and used multiple lithographic stones to add color to a photographic base. Detroit Publishing Co. later produced and sold such views in the United States, and this print is listed as number 6170 in its 1905 catalog of Swiss views, which makes it a useful record of how tourist scenery was packaged for American buyers.
