The Gemmi Pass climbs more than 7,000 feet between the Valais and the Bernese Oberland, and for centuries it was a demanding mule path linking Leukerbad with Kandersteg. This photochrom shows the Hotel Wildstrubel at the pass, a stopping point for travelers who crossed the high ground on foot, by horse, or by mule. The photochrom process, developed by the Photoglob company in Zürich, produced vivid color prints from photographs, and publishers sold them as souvenirs to the growing number of tourists visiting Switzerland in the 1890s. The print also records the rugged alpine setting that drew those visitors.
