Grindelwald's Bear Hotel sits in the Bernese Oberland village at the foot of the Alps, with the glacier close by, and that pairing of inn and ice is what sets this view apart. Hotels like this one served the growing number of travelers who came to Grindelwald in the late 1800s to walk on the ice and see the high peaks. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Zurich that printed a photograph in color from several stone plates. This copy was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold Swiss views like it in America to tourists and armchair travelers.
